Membership

We believe that choosing a Rotary Club is an important and personal decision. In considering becoming a Rotarian, finding a club that best represents your values as well as providing the fulfilling avenues of service is central. Prospective members are encouraged to visit several clubs, to gain full-knowledge of what you are signing yourself up for. We want to be a good fit for you and you for us.

What is Rotary?

Rotary is an international service organization made up of people who share a passion for and commitment to enhancing communities and improving lives across the world. Rotary clubs exist in almost every country, totaling a membership of more than 1.2 million people. Joining Rotary is an opportunity to take action and make a difference, while enjoying personal rewards and creating lifelong friendships.

In contrast to other service clubs and organisations, Rotary is apolitical and nonreligious. Rotary projects and meetings are not the forum for realising religious or political aspirations. As a truly global and humanitarian organisation, we welcome openly all people, no matter their gender, ethnicity, faith, national origin or sexual orientation. Across all our varied differences, Rotarians draw upon our shared humanity in an effort to create a better world.

From and For our Community

South Brisbane is a multi-cultural hub of Queensland with a rapidly growing population that shapes the evolution of our community. Having members with different backgrounds and viewpoints gives our club a broader understanding of the community and its problems, and better equips it to find solutions. Equally important is fostering a culture of inclusion, where these differences are respected, supported, and valued. Our club strives to reflect our community by including members from a mix of professions, genders, ages, and ethnicities.

THE FOUR WAY TEST

The Four Way Test underscores Rotary’s value of integrity and is central to the way we engage with our community. It has also long served as an ethical guide for members to live by in their personal and professional relationships.

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the TRUTH?
  2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
  4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Avenues of Service

Rotary South Brisbane is a member-driven club, and central to that is enabling members to do projects they are passionate about. In particular, our members have strong interests working on projects at the district-level, with direct involvement in Donations in Kind, Australian Rotary Health, Interact and the Rotary Youth Transition Seminar.

As a group we strive to focus on six project areas, specifically:

  • Service Awards
  • Youth Programs
  • Polio
  • Children's Picnic
  • International Aid
  • Environment

We also welcome creative ideas for fundraising. Some members are naturally talented at this avenue, keenly immersing themselves, developing their leadership and organisational skills and mentoring other members.

Volunteer Organisation

We emphasise that we are a volunteer organisation, and many of our members lead busy lives. Our expectations of members is that they will make clear how much they would like to contribute. We recognise that people's time and attention varies through life's stages, and recognise that priorities lie with family and work. Members serve in the way that they best can and they will be respected for that.

Membership

To become a Rotarian with South Brisbane, the first thing to do is attend a meeting, or even one of our events. Get in touch via contact@rotarysouthbrisbane.org.au, or by social media. Our meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month, but do sometimes change.

Attending a few meetings, and having an opportunity to contribute to projects, will give you the chance to come to know us and for us to come to know you - and to see if we are a fit for each other. And if that is the case then it is just a matter of initiating the membership application process.

Membership fees vary from club to club but usually contribute to administration costs and branding, public liability insurance, website etc. as well as funds for hosting guest speakers and miscellaneous charitable donations. South Brisbane charges a biannual membership fee of $150.

Rotary is a fantastic organisation to be a part of and we hope our club will be the opportunity for you to serve.
